Scores

So I have made two graphic scores for our pieces for laptop musicianship. Our group decided that we all make our scores in the same style- drawing with black pens on paper. So this is how my scores look like:

This is my score fpr the second piece. The lower line represents the sample of chewing gum that loops throughout all piece. The “ZIP” line shows the sample of a zip which I manipulate in soundscratcher at certain times. The upper line that says “CHOIR” represents the sample of a choir that is playing in soundscratcher using worm. The circles get bigger because during the piece I increase the grain densinty so the sound changes. The lines on top of the circles represent the changes in instrument’s volumem which I control manually in soundscratcher.

This is my score for our first piece. It is devided into three sections because the piece itself has three different parts. The upper “cloud” of dots represent Quanoon with the reverb. The higher the dots, the higher the pitch. The lower part represents supercollider. Notice that the line (that represents C in 3rd and 4th octaves) goes on since it starts palying and the phased sound which is controled by ~MO repeatedly phases in and out of the tune with this continuous sound.

These are my scores, hope they are easy to undirstand, because our goal was to make a score that somedy else who has the same resourses could look at it and play it himself.

Throughout this semester I have learned quite a lot of interesting stuff including the practical things in supercollider and IxI Quarks, as well as the interesting theoretical knowledge about harmony andthe way the music “should flow” inviting the listener to explore it.

That’s it for today,

See you.

The second piece, recording

Julio comented that my part in the socond piece lacks new sounds. I think that the smoothness and ambience of our second piece is the point of it, since we wanted it to be different from our quite chaotic first piece. Yesterday Nicolas’ comment on it prooved that it’s working so I guess it’s going to the right direction.

Tumorrow we will try to record botch songs using a HD recorder. That will enable us to use spatialisation placing our speakers around the mic. Hope this will work.

Our team thought of an idea of using a dice in our second piece. The idea is that we role the dice in every performance and every number has it’s own improvisational element somewhere before the ending. We rejected that idea for a while, but on sunday we talked about it again, and I guess we will incorporate that into the second piece.

After recording both pieces we will try to notate them. Richard suggested an idea of drawing the score on the paper with a pen and then scaning it to a digital format. I guess that’s the way we will do it. Since the second piece has the dice (chance) factor in it, we will have to notate all 6 possibilities. This will be done by drawing a procetion of a dice with the instructions what has to be done for all of the six numbers.

Score, the second piece

So,

This is my score for our first piece in LM. The upper part shows what is done in SuperCollider, the lower one represents iXi. Time scale is from left to right, vertical scale represents pitch changes. One line plays on and on in SC, because that is the C and the little mountains show only phasing from and back to it.

Score is done in Paint, so it isn’t the smartest looking score in the world, but I like the colours :)

Our group started working on the second piece for LM. We would like to make it more melodic and “positive” than the first one. I think I will use a simple Pbind with the default piano in my part. After some experimenting with it I got to really like the result, which sounds something similar to the live coding piano video that Julio showed us couple of weeks ago.

At last! I’ve got a blog! ^^

Ok, the idea of getting marked for blogging first seemed kind of weird, but as Richard said, it kind of forces us to research and share our knowledge. I guess it makes sense :)

So, what was I up to this week…

Trying to figure out a way to write a score to our piece! But first, I have to find a proper way to end the war between MACs and PCs :D The thing is, when I save text from a MAC (no matter if I use a memory stick or save text in my email), I get a whole bunch of nonsense when I open it on PC at home. For example- this is a part of Tom’s lesson on Supercollider:

br>// e.g. SC_081024_124021.aiff

// Concert files to 24bit format for use in Logic Pro
// Install SFUtil first!

a = SFUtil.new

a.findPeak

a.peak

So as long as I don’t own my own MAC, I have to find a way to make PC and MAC be friends :)

Ok, I know this is not the best blog post in the world, I hope to write better ones in the future :)
